Today is World Thyroid Day!

These special days always prove to be a surprise to me but World Thyroid Day is a cause I can get behind!!

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism about 8 years ago! It also runs in my family, as well as thyroid cancer.

It is said that 1 in 10 people will be diagnosed with some type of thyroid disorder in their lifetime!

So what is the thyroid and why is it important?

It is a small butterfly shaped gland that lies on the lower front part of the neck. It produces the hormones T4(thyroxine) and T3(Triiodothyronine) hormones which instruct all the cells in the body to use energy! When the thyroid is functioning properly it helps maintain the right amount of these hormones in the body! It’s primary function is to control the body’s metabolic rate.

This is important to me as a trainer to know if my clients struggle with their thyroid because it may have an affect on our training and diet! It’s not just hypothyroidism but hyperthyroidism as well!

There are several types of disorders of the Thyroid-

Hypothyroidism. Hyperthyroidism. Graves Disease. Hashimoto’s. Thyroiditis. Thyroid Cancer

Causes of Thyroid disorders

A thyroid disorder may be caused due to several factors such as deficiency of iodine, inflammation of the thyroid gland, cancerous tumors, radiation therapy, thyroid surgery, genetic predisposition, autoimmune diseases such as Graves’ disease or Hashimoto’s disease.

Common Symptoms of Thyroid Disorders

Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland)
• Agitation
• Reduced menstrual flow
• Sweating
• Increase appetite, etc.

Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid gland)
• Weight gain
• Fatigue
• Depression
• Heavy or scanty menstrual flow, etc.

Medications for Thyroid Issues

There are several types of thyroid medicines out there and you will need to talk to your doctor and see what is best for you. There are synthetic thyroid hormone medicines, as well as all natural thyroid medicines.

I suggest that you research them and see what ones you are willing to try! I say this from experience because the first one they try to give you is Synthroid(levothyroxine) and it does work for some people but most find it doesn’t or it quits working! Be an informed patient and stand up for yourself! If your doctor wont listen(which this seems to often be the case with most thyroid doctors-unfortunately) find another one or get a second opinion!

Natural Remedy’s for Thyroid Issues

There are several natural remedy’s that you can try or do in addition to your prescribed medicine. Do your research to make sure there are no interactions with your medication!

There are several essential oils that are beneficial for the thyroid!

  • Lavender

  • Clove

  • Myrrh

  • Lemongrass

  • Copaiba

  • Frankincense

Also, I suggest you invest in only doTERRA essential oils so you are sure you are ingesting and topically using the purest essential oils!

There is also some good data out there to support doTERRA’s Life Long Vitality Supplements being a wonderful support for the thyroid! Several people report their thyroid hormone number regulating to normal after taking the supplements for several months!

There is also several all natural herbs that are great support for the thyroid as well-again do your research and pick a reputable place to purchase your supplements

I also suggest you purchase and read Dr. Mariza Snyder’s book, “The Essential Oils Hormone Solution” as it has tons of great info and natural solutions for your thyroid.

When you receive the diagnosis of a thyroid disease the BEST thing you can do is do your own research and read a ton!

Happy World Thyroid Day!
